Friday December 2nd, 2016 – John English Update
Winter Concert: Our winter concert will be taking place on Wednesday, December 14th beginning at 6:30 p.m. Our Kindergarten to Grade 5 students will be participating in the presentation along with our Grade 8 Band and Strings groups. We know this will be an enjoyable evening for all. Those parents who are able are encouraged to walk to the school due to the limited parking space. Extra parking is available at the Mimico Adult Centre.
Assembly Hall Art Show: All families are reminded of the Assembly Hall Art Show that is happening from November 23rd to December 14th. The opening reception will take place on Wednesday, November 30th from 6:00–8:00 p.m. Each year the Assembly Hall located at 1 Colonel Samuel Smith Park hosts a winter art exhibition. Students from all over south Etobicoke are invited to submit works of art for consideration. On the opening night there will be activities, songs and fun for all ages.
Movember Comes to an End: Thank you to all those of the John English community who supported the Movember Foundation. Our students have learned about helping others while having fun. Many students have been asking about wearing their moustaches next year. Congratulations to Mr. Nunes who was voted by our students to have the most creative moustache. We thank Ms. Roberts for her organizing efforts and to all the male staff who participated in the adventure. Our fundraising total has now reached over $1600.00.

Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade: The Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade is happening this weekend, Saturday, December 3rd beginning at 10:00 a.m. More information is available at http://lakeshoresantaclausparade.com/
Scholastic Book Fair: Every year John English participates in the Scholastic Book Fair. This Book Fair offers students and their families the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of French and English Language books, as well as other items such as activity kits, posters, etc. There is something for everyone with many items very reasonably priced, such as bookmarks for 50 cents and books in the $3.00 to $5.00 range. Proceeds from the Book Fair help fund resources for the library and our French and English literacy programs. There will also be a prize draw included as part of the Book Fair. All students will receive a ballot (no purchase required) and at the end of the book fair, one English and one French student will each win $25 dollars worth of free books! In addition, each winner’s teacher will also receive $25 in free books to use in their class.
This year the Book Fair will run from Thursday, December 1st to Wednesday, December 7th. All students will have an opportunity to visit the book fair during school hours as well as during the lunch hour. Parents are invited to the book fair as well. Each morning, we will open at 8:30 a.m. if parents wish to browse or make purchases before school starts. We will not be open on the PD day of December 2nd, but will, however, stay open on Tuesday, December 6th until 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, December 7th until 5:00 p.m., to coincide with the SAC poinsettia delivery. We extend a huge thank you in advance to SAC and to the many parents who are volunteering their time to help staff the Book Fair. We couldn’t run this event without your support.
Winter Coat Drive: Thank you to all those parents and families who donated items for our ‘Winter Coat Drive’. The John English community donated two overflowing, large boxes of coats, boots, mittens, sweaters and any other items to keep people warm in the winter. We thank each and every one for your generosity.
