Winter Walk to School Day – February 1st: We are excited to announce that John English JMS will be taking part in Winter Walk Day next Wednesday, February 1!
Walking to school in winter has many potential benefits, including benefits for your child’s health and well-being (like opportunities to learn and socialize on the way to school, and arriving to school alert and ready to learn), our community (reduced traffic congestion around the school) and the environment, too.
In addition to encouraging families who can to walk to school that day, we will also be taking students on a walk in the neighbourhood during the school day on Wednesday, February 1st.
Walk with your child to school next Wednesday to join in the celebration! If you’re on your way somewhere else and plan on driving to your next destination, consider walking and taking transit (see Google maps for available transit routes to/from your destination: https://www.google.ca/maps), or park/drop your child off a block or two away from the school to walk the rest of the way in. If you’re not able to join, encourage your child to walk with a friend.
Winter Walking Tips:
- Keep hands and head covered to prevent heat loss.
- On really cold days wear a scarf over your face and mouth.
- Wear warm, waterproof boots.
- Wear a warm coat that deflects the wind.
- Woolen clothing helps to retain the heat.
- Wear clothing or carry knapsacks with reflective material – it’s important to be seen.
- If possible, change wet clothes at school – tuck an extra pair of socks and mitts into knapsacks.

Fabulous Pizza Day: Thank you again to our monthly army of volunteers who give of their time to make our pizza days run so smoothly. Over 140 pizzas are served, that is over 1000 slices of pizza, to our Kindergarten to Grade 8 students. Our parent support is greatly appreciated.
Play Your Part Assembly: On our schoolyard, our PALS leaders provide supervised games for our Grade 1 to 5 students at recess and during lunch when the weather is permitting. The Right to Play organization supports the PALS programs across the country. They brought a message in the assembly that informed the students of the importance of play in the world of children. We thank Ms. Jenkins and Mme Gitto for their time supporting our PALS leaders and for organizing the assembly.

First Nations School: On January 9th, the First Nations School of Toronto opened its doors at their new location in the former Eastern Commerce CI.
As a result of the move, the school has more space to expand for Kindergarten to Grade 8 next school year and will also be adding a Grade 9 program. The school is open to all TDSB students and may be of particular interest to First Nation, Métis and Inuit students. There is a Parent Information Night at the school on Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Refer to the new school website for additional information: schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/fnst/Home.aspx
Sports Update: Our boys basketball team continues to practise as they prepare for their season tournament. Our girls volleyball teams are also practising many times each week as they prepare for their season tournaments which are happening in February. We thank all of our students for their dedication and our coaching teachers for their time and commitment. Also, our badminton intramurals continue throughout the week with our Grade 5 to 8 students participating at lunch time or after school. Over 100 students are participating in this indoor activity.
